Learning Out of the Box
Learning Out of the Box is a learning and facilitation tool in the form of a board game. It can be tailored to individual organisations, both in terms of the corporate visual identity and also the content of the questions. One of the many advantages of this tool is that once the basic unit is purchased, additional sets of questions can be created to work in different learning situations for each client organisation.
'Learning out of the Box' can be used in a variety of settings - at the beginning of a programme to inject energy, to check learning retention at the end of a programme, as a briefing tool or to base a whole training event around.
The familiar format of the board game engages people and encourages discussion of potentially uncomfortable issues. The game consists of:
- Opportunities - short knowledge questions to check learning
- Challenges - scenarios that require teams to think about applying the learning in the workplace.
Teams move around the board, landing on either an Opportunity square or a Challenge square. Points are awarded for correct responses. Teams get the chance to challenge and give feedback to other teams, helping to develop energy and retention of learning.
The concept is based on the following principles:
- People learn well in a social context, especially when they are having fun!
- People are engaged by a challenge and the competitive element helps to create that challenge while keeping it in proportion with the learning objectives
- Consolidation of learning is accelerated by peer-to-peer feedback and demonstration
- Scenarios help to link principles to the practicalities of their working lives.
